Question:
Situation:
I took my car in for service because the anti-lock brakes and traction system were coming on when I hit the brakes (dry pavement conditions). My lights also flickered and once the car stalled.
How to get carburetor fast idle to unload faster?
When I dropped the car off and explained the symptoms - the manager was not sure of the cause. When I did get a call from them, they said the car had the symptoms I mentioned when they took if for a test drive (duh) . They said they had difficulty finding the problem but blamed it on some corrosive wiring near the power distribution. Also, they said it took 3 hours of time to identify the problem and fix it, but it didn't take any parts.
I don't want to pay that much. I feel like they should have identified the problem sooner. I never signed a preauthorization for any cost. Do I have to pay the $240 to get my car back?
I would be happy to pay $80 for one hour of service. I feel they should have identified the problem in an hour.

Is a car street legal with broken headlights?
Problems with cars are not always easily diagnosed. It would have been courteous to at least give you a call when the diagnosis went long on time.Depending on the state law in your locality they may not be able to charge you that much without your authorization, but remember:
1. You couldn't fix it your self
2. the repair is reasonable in cost, the fact that no parts were required is merely interesting. they could have spliced in a new section of wire and increased your cost for "parts"
3. A new car or other mode of transportation sure would cost you more than they are charging you.
My 2004 Impala is leaking oil, but has not run hot. What are the possible repairs?
I would just pay it as it seems that they are trying to work with you. You stated that you beleive that they should have found it in an hour. Wiring problems take time and time costs money. I would just be happy that they could find it that fast I personally seen technicians fight and track wiring issues for days, intermittants are the worst to locate.
I need to no how to wire a coil on a mitsubishi space wagon?
Electrical problem? Certainly possible to run up 3 hours and only need a bit of wire. Not counting time on the diagnostic computer.Auto repair shop trying to charge me $240 (3 hours) for a repair that required no parts?
Point out you didn't pre-authorize and see if they want to deal a bit; but if you signed ANYTHING when you dropped it off, you are going to have to pay.
About how much does it cost to replace a car transmittion?
Most places will charge you a rate for diagnosing the problem, each issue is a separate charge to diagnose, then they will charge you per hr to fix each problem, yeah it sucks but Bend over here it comes! sorry! They fixed your problem.
Now, if you want a more-competent shop, go to the one that charges $240 an hour, and they'll probably find the problem in an hour.
Why I am getting a small electric shock when I close the car door?
If you want the car back, you have to pay..Signs of your disturbutor going out?
that sounds pretty high, but if you told them to go ahead and fix it,then you will have to pay what they charge.yea i know those damn garages try to bleed a person every thing they own.now you know why i do my own work.maybe thats what you should do,is your own work.if you dont know much, just get a hanes book on your car and read up on it.the reason why it cost $240 is because of labor. No one is going to fix or check for symptoms for free. Pay them the money and you'll get your car back.
Most shops have it posted in clear site the hourly rate of labor, so your best bet is to pay them, get your car back, maybe try a different shop if any problems arise in the future. Maybe ones recommended by friends or family members.
Well if you went there knowing what the hourly charge was then sorry then you probably should pay the full amount. I wouldn't want to pay either. And yes they are probably ripping you off, its an auto repair shop. That's what the seem to do for some reason. It's hard to find a good honest repair shop anymore.
VW Golf GTI mk2 passenger side rear wheel locking when no brakes are applied, any ideas?
Sometimes things like this are extremely difficult to find because the symptoms could be one of any number of things or the problem is intermittent in some way so it is impossible to easily check it while the problem is happening. I once had an airconditioning problem in a Mercedes and it eventually required ripping out the whole dashboard and taking out the heater box and replacing all sorts of stuff. Finally it got down to the point where there was only one hose left, and that was some sort of hose within-a-hose that passed through the firewall. You have no idea how much time it took to find this. It turned out this was where the problem was but in cases where so many things are interconnected it can become a real nightmare to find. Electrical problems can be a real pain because the cause of a problem could be just about anywhere and finding it is not so easy as you might think. What does it mean when the ABS light is on in a 1994 explorer?
You are lucky they did it in only three hours. Mine took three weeks. Do the math.
Could lean mixture cause even higher fuel consumption?
I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but I feel this situation warrants my comments. The shop/dealer where you took your vehicle for repairs obviously charges $80.00 per hour, which is not a bad rate. If YOU feel you could've done the job yourself in LESS THAN 3 HOURS, why didn't you? Obviously you DON'T KNOW HOW TO, or you wouldn't have taken your vehicle in to have it fixed in the first place. As someone else posted, if you don't want to pay for services, you can purchase a service manual and attempt to perform the repairs yourself. You are quite fortunate that the servicing tech took ONLY 3 hours to find the cause of your problem. Some "electrical nightmares" can take upwards of a whole day or more, depending on how deeply the vehicle needs to be disassembled to locate the problem. This has nothing to do with competence. If YOU are the mechanic performing the repair, how would YOU like it, if YOU got paid only ONE HOUR, for EIGHT HOURS worth of work (which would be about 25, out of the 80 dollars BTW)? Would that be fair? How about the $40,000 plus that the mechanics have to spend on THEIR OWN tools OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKET? Be happy that your vehicle is fixed. Would you complain, if someone charged you $200.00 to install a toilet in your house? If not, why would you expect to pay less for automotive repairs? I find it interesting how "easy" the general public PERCEIVES automotive repairs are. Yet when things go awry, when they ATTEMPT it, it gets towed to the shop, costing MORE than it would've, had it been brought to the mechanic in the first place. Sorry for the rant. How much does a full body kit cost to install?
I would say that you should just pay them to get your car, then possible take them to small claims court to see if you can get some of your money back. Before going to court, get quotes from other companies to show the judge what you should have paid for the repair.More Questions & Answers ...
