Question:
I have a 1998 corsa 1.2 8v and it is using lots of fuel. I get just over 50 miles to £10 and i really don't know what it is? I think that it might be firing on 3 cylinders as it sounds like it is chugging when you stand near the exhaust at the back. It also had some gunge on the oil cap however it doesn't use any water and never overheats. It sometimes has trouble starting up, the engine fires but dies and if you try and rev it it doesn't respond. The car has only covered 67,000 miles. I have just changed the spark plugs and oil. Could somebody please give me some advice, thankyou
Answers:
Sounds like head off time to me. Your symptoms say loss of compression, and moisture in cylinder.
Sorry mate you have to bite the bullet and hope the head is not cracked as well.
Hopefully you have put the plug leads back in the correct order. It is possible to change the order and still have the engine run, however the power will be down and thus the fuel consumption. If the high consumption started after the plug change check the order.

It sounds like you have a valve sticking if you get some Forte Fuel treatment and put it in your fuel tank there is a good chance it will free the valves. It is recomended by Vauxhall for this problem. This tends to happen more when the car is used on short journeys. When you have put in the Forte you want to run the car at high speed on the motorway or daul carrage way this will clean out any sticky valves.sounds like you got a bad miss.you could have a bad plug wire.also check the fuel pump and gas filter.
