there is probably a free-play adjustment but it has a very limited range - after you replace the worn components it will be useful in fine tuning the steering ( fix it - that is the answer )
Losing water, 1976 3/4 ton pick-up?
the order to fix is - alignment ( if it can be aligned ) - tie rod ends - idler arm - steering box ( if it is rack and pinion with a worn steering rack you are screwed - unless you can find a used one they cost a fortune )
2001 Nissan Xterra - How much should repairs cost?

after chaging the timing belt?
leave the steering wheel alone. work on the front end. take it to a front end shop and let pros do it before you kill yourself. you probably haven't a clue about front end work.Sounds like a worn rack,
Unless there is a steering box in a real old one.
Picture a gear with a slider and teeth on top and bottom. As this wears the play in the steering wheel gets greater. You may have worn tie rod ends this will seem as the wheel is loose and you feel a rattle in the wheel,
Raise the wheel off the ground and try to turn it by hand (outside the car) watch the connection at the tie rod end, if it has any give or play then it is worn and should be replaced and aligned
1994 Mazda Protege cross member/motor support bushings?
Yes there is adjustment screw in all model cars but some times there is movement groups of steering become damage this make steering useless and need replace steering.can u by pass an e.g.r valve in a car without hurting the cpu?
there is no adjustments for free play in a steering wheel, its a sign you need fe work. Older camrys have racks go bad all the time. it is most likley the inner tie rod ends. i just put one on my g/f 89 camry. its kinda tough and the labor will kill ya :) but you may get lucky and it might just be a spindle bearing or outer tie rod. the way we check them is raise the car and shake the wheel back and forth and up and down. i would take it to a good shop like goodyear or firestone that does alot of front end work. i bet you might need a rack and some outer tie rod ends.More Questions & Answers ...
