The air conditioner in my car seems broken...?

Question:
It just got warm out so I went to use my A/C for the first time (2003 chevy cavalier, btw) and it's definitely not blowing cool air. It actually seems to blow whatever temperature it is outside into my vehicle (this morning it was cooler, maybe 60 and I tried it and the air was "cool" but definitely not the chilly a/c air that it's supposed to be). When it's 80, it feels like hot air coming through. Someone told me I could be low on freon (sp?) and I saw a DIY a/c kit at Auto Zone for about $25.00. Should I take it to the shop or give the self-treatment a go? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

When you turn on the a/c if the compressor is working properly the motor should "drag" a bit. and by that i mean itll make a deeper noise and run at a little bit higher rpm. it takes quite a bit to turn the compressor pully so the motor has to work harder. if the compressor works then you prolly need freon. But on a car that new, you prolly have a leak if its already low. So i would find a place that tests it for free to make sure you dont have a leak. If you dont have a leak then you should buy the kit from the parts place. Its a lot cheaper to do it yourself. And its not hard at all, just follow the instructions.

check in the mail for the car repair coupons, some places will offer free a/c system testing. Of course they will try to pressure you into using them to fix it, but thats up to you.

Passenger side wheel cylinder?

you have to make sure it's not your compressor...if the clutch on the compressor is engaging when you turn on the AC then the freon kit is a good choice..and it's very easy to do

You could try the kit, that's what I would use.

My car shows a P1401 code when checked for smog, what is and where can I repair, and approx cost?

It sounds like you have the button pushed in that takes the air from the outside and uses it in your vents but to fix that all you have to do is push the "a/c" button. If that doesn't work then you're low on freon. If you can spare the change SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE and take it to a shop... average cost $30-50 depending on how much freon you're car holds.

Hi can i check how long does a water pump usually last?

Take it to a repair shop, mechanic some paces offer free AC inspections and also some hoses are under a lot of presser and can be dangerous if you don't no what you are doing

How many qts of oil does the ford 460 engine require at change?

Assuming you have all the switches in the right position, and still getting hot air. You have a freon leak, most likely.
You can buy the kit and it may work for a while but with the leak by the end of summer, you may have to refill it again. Take it in and get it checked out. If it's a seal, they can replace that and then the system will last you for a while.

If it's the compressor leaking, then you have the choice, repair it or just use the kit until you can save enough to replace it.

Get it fixed, one way or the other. The defrosters also use the AC to help remove moisture in the air before it blows across the windshield. Good luck
