What is a "satellite gear" in a 2001 F150?

The mechanic says that the "satellite gear" has gone out in our 2001 truck. They are quoting us $3500 to repair. What is a satellite gear?

I don't know the drivetrain of the F150, but I think you have a planet gear layout in the differential or in the gearbox.
