The gdi engine had a fault where carbon deposits built up inside the block choking valves etc. Mitsubishi had a way of cleaning it without removing th head but most other places require head removal.This sounds like a symptom of that problem.

Check your car in the dark with the boonet up and engine running if there is a short to earth from an HT lead you will easerly see it , if not check your spark plugs for foulingGo for the easy answers first. The mechanic's suggestion is a good one to spot leaking HT. Dont change the leads on spec. measure them with an ohm meter - at a guess 5000ohms to about 20,000ohms (proportional to length).
Take a plug out and look at it and check the gap. If they are old then change them anyway.
misfiring under load is a favourite for ignition weaknesses as under load a spark is harder to produce.
