Three things could cause it to glaze over. 1) belt too loose, 2)belt too tight 3) slippage caused by too much load. All are due to excessive friction and ultimately heat.

It might be good to take the belt off and manually turn all of the accessories that your belt has to turn. Two major causes in this case are a) alternator under too much load (high amperage devices such as car stereo amplifier, low or bad battery, etc. can cause this) or b) Air or "smog" pump has started to freeze up. Also it could be the bearings in the water pump, excessive strain on the power steering pump... which reminds me of a fourth factor not mentioned previously. 4) Oil on the belt. If your power steering unit leaks onto the belt it causes the belt to slip and also damages the belt (because the belt is rubber). Any leaky oil from any oil source could cause this. In any case, replace the serpentine belt - but try to find the cause first so you don't have to replace it again really soon.

Heat, maybe a sticking pulley, or a part getting ready to go. Try belt dressing, and pay attention to your alternator, water pump, and power steering.

A shine is normal on a belt that's been on a while and not a problem. A squeal is usually a sign of a loose belt. Since there is an automatic belt tensioner, I'd think that the belt tensioner is worn out.

How do i start my ATV without an ignition?

The belt is slipping. Old age is one cause but the primary cause is the belt tensioner is weak or stuck., not keeping the belt tight..

on a 2000 2wd suburban with differential problems... we were quoted 2000 dollars to fix it. is this reasonabl

Heat is the cause of glazing.Maybe one of your accessory drives like water pump, alternator, smog pump, power steering pump etc etc may be going bad causing the belt to slip on its pulley causing friction and then causing the belt to glaze over.Maybe take the belt off and spin each pulley to make sure everything spins freely(with the motor not running).Good luck.

Check for any leaks. Coolant on a belt will usually make it squeel.
