Question:
I have a brother and a father-in-law who are willing to install a head gasket for me if I buy a new one but so many people are saying it will take a long time... how long are we looking at because I don't want to wait week's (or even days at that) to have a head gasket installed and I am not looking to pay more just to have a mechanic put it on (I was told $1,500 to install... for that much I'd be better off to just pay $1,300 and get a used engine that is $1,295 with 30k miles on it as well as a automatic transmission.

Please help me with this, thanks. How long am I looking at to put a head gasket on AND how long to put a timing belt and thermostat on?

This depends on the expertise of you brother and father in law, also on the engine. Older engines are typically simpler and easier to take apart/reassemble. A newer car with a small engine wouldn't be to bad. I did my head gasket on my 4cyl cavalier in about 4 hrs. If they have problems it could take as much as a month or more. If they now what they are doing then it should only take about 5-7 hours, again depending on the engine.More Questions & Answers ...
