Sometimes the gas cap can cause the check engine light to come on, and show a fault in the emission system. Go to an auto parts store, and have them check it, they will usually do it for free. They will also be able to tell you the most likely cause of the fault. I'll bet the gas cap is it. The system counts on the fuel system being sealed, and the leak will cause a fault.
