Question:
Cost of replacement is $380 to $500. But car only travelled 45000 not due till 100,000. Can the belt break because its 6.5 ys old and what damage will it do to a boxer motor if it does.

Answers:

burnt smell from ac vents?

Like everything overtime the timing belt can get dry-rotted & have stress cracks. It's best to change it for peace of mind. If your engine is a 2.0L DOHC, 2.5L DOHC or 3.3L DOHC you diffently should change the belt, all these engines are interfence engines, which means if the timing belt breaks valve to piston damage is likely, which means alot more then $500 to repair! If your engine is a differnt size I did not list , the vehicle will only leave you stranded if the timing belt breaks.

Has anyone have problems with there Dodge Caravan brakes wearing prematurely?

The belt is rubber and like any organic product deteriorates with age, not just mileage. Probably not a terrible idea to replace it now. You won't like the bill if it breaks.

I scratched my polished aluminum wheels - how can I fix it?

If your engine is an "interference engine" when the belt breaks, the pistons will hit the valves and do a lot of damage. Any time the belt breaks, you are stuck. Replace it.
