Without a diagnostic I'd be guessing. So when you say you mash on the gas pedal, if you keep the gas pedal down, does the engine stay running? and only stop when you release the gas pedal? If so then I'd be checking the egr valve to see if it's stuck open or if you have a vacuum leak.
