Question:
I bought this car a year ago and it didn't appear to have too much visible rust, just a little paint bubbling in a few areas. Now the rust has gotten bad enough around the gas tank that there is a small hole, and other areas on the car are getting worse too. Is there a cheap way to stop the rust and cover it up. I'd like to do it myself as I don't have a lot of money to take it to a body shop right now.

yeah, you can do this yourself. at hardware stores and auto parts stores there are different products on the market for stopping rust. what you need to do is remove as much of the rust that you can, and then apply the rust-eating chemical (follow the directions on the bottle). when the rust is eaten away, clean the chemical residue off the area, and put a few coats of paint on the area. The chemical may be as much as $10, but that may be a high estimate.

You can bondo the bad areas, this can take a bit of time to do properly. You will need to first sand the paint off and around these areas, and there is a special technique to this. You need to make sure that you sand it so that the outside edge that you have sanded is smooth, it is kind of difficult to explain. You then need to bondo the area and make sure the bondo is smooth. After you need to prime it, then wet sand it, then paint the area.
