If the gauge is reading hot, but the engine isn't actually overheating, you may have a bad temp sending unit. If you have an electric fan, you will have two sending units. One controls the on/off for the fan and sometimes controlled by the computer. The other goes to the instrument cluster to operate the temp gauge. You will need to check a shop manual for your vehicle to determine location and which is which.

You fill it up to 10-15 psi and look for the leak.
