What is these noises my scion TC is making?

Question:
I just bought a used scion TC with an auto transmission about 2 months ago, and in the past 2 weeks it has started to do 2 odd things,
1- makes a hissing noise while accelerating
2- idols a little rough, not like shaking the car apart, but enough to feel it, as well as it sounds a little rough
Any idea what is the problem?
any idea how much it will cost to fix? (i am out of the bumper to bumper warranty, but still under the power train coverage)

What can I wrap around my starter to protect it from heat?

Few things to check:
1) Does your TC have a supercharger or turbo?
2) Where in your car is the hissing coming from?

A few cheap things to try to fix the idle:
-Fuel injector cleaner to clean out the injectors.
-Clean/replace your air filter. If you have a reusable one, clean it, if not, replace it.
-Check the vacuum lines for a loose connection(just tug lightly on them)
(should only cost you under $50 for both)

Have a shop check these things:
-If you don't know if you have a supercharger/turbo have a shop check for one.
-Check the CV boots for wear
-Check the wheels if they are rubbing
-Check the brake pads for rubbing
-Check the belts for cracking/wear (can contribute to the hissing sound)
-Check vacuum lines for cracks/loose connections

Find your air cleaner/filter box. Follow the hose up to the throttle body. Check that hose, and the hoses coming off of it to make sure that they're all well seated and have no holes. Make sure your air filter is clean as well. Either of these cause both problems. Also get your fuel filter changed if you don't know when it was done.

It is probably a vacuum leak, unless you have a turbo. If there is no "check engine" light, then I would start looking for a loose, or disconnected vacuum line. There should be a decal under the hood depicting the vacuum diagram, I would start tracing that. Many autos have vacuum lines running into the cabin, usually to operate the heat and a/c controls. If you have recently had the dash apart, to install a stereo or replace a bulb, then I would check there first. If the "check Engine" light is on, then I would get the codes read, and start with the system that is causing the computer error. If you don't find a leak, or don't have a "check engine" light, then I would get a vacuum gage, and start diagnosing the engine, or return it to the shop, since the engine is still under warranty.

Hissing may be a vacum leak, but you should hear that while you are idling too. If you can, try to pinpoint where the noise is from. You may just find a hose popped off.
Have you checked for kinked/ blocked exhaust. This condition would present a loss of power as well as what you described. If it seems to be holding back at higher RPM, and shifting late, check your exhaust and catylitic converter.
