This is only a recent occurance, what is causing it, and what can I do? its a 00 fiat punto, it happens after I have been in the car about 40 mins, in slow moving traffic.

stop and go or slow movement in traffic is the number one reason for overheating. sounds to me like you have a few things that might need to be looked at. Start with coolant level to see if it is full, then move on to coolant fans. you may have a fan that is not running when it should be. some vehicles only have one while others have two. if your fan blades are turning then you have other problems that need to be looked for. like thermostate sticking, colapsing radiator hose or the worst case scenerio timing belt stretched and out of time. you should have the belts on the engine checked for tightness. a faulty water pump may also cause you problem, due to lack of water flow... good luck.2001 ford explorer sporttrac , check engine light came on?
Sounds like the thermostat. Have it changed and the coolant level topped off.Sounds like your cooling fan is not operating. (I believe it is an electric one).Check to see if the connections to the fan are tight if so you may want to take your vehicle to a shop to check the cooling system (I don't think it's the thermostat because the car would overheat after 40 mins without traffic too)

check thermostatLazy therostat or your fan relay is shot. have the system checks for proper operation. does it seem to stay cool when moving at normal speeds? If so it would be the fans. It may also be a sign of low fluid or a bad water pump.

Depending on how it's wired it may be possible to bridge the sensor to check that the fan works.
Before you spend any money having parts replaced first check the coolant level. Then run the car up to temp to check the fan comes on. Also check the condition of the radiator. Probably more than 75% of the time it will be one of these things.
Other possibilities include thermostat, internally collapsed hose, water pump, silt/corrosion in the block etc.
