I have to hold key in place while driving...do i need new key and tumbler or ignition switch?

Question:
i have a 88 honda civic LX...and recently the car will only run if i hold the key to start it and keep holding it---otherwise if i let go of the key, the key wont stick and snap back. I was told this was the tumbler? Is this true because i was told if it was the ignition switch itself the car wouldnt start at all...can anyone confirm this?

Maybe you should look into getting a third hand, that way you could hold the key and still be maintaining you 10 and 2 o'clock on the wheel.

i own a repair shop, and whats happened to it is the switch its self has slipped loose on it,,this is what causes this to happen,,you may find though when you remove it that it would be better to replace it ,rather than try and fix it,, i usually do just replace the whole thing,,this way you put an end to your problem with it,,the switch and keys cost around 80 bucks,,to replace,,good luck ,i hope this help,s.

ford troubleshoot?

the apparatus you put the key in is simply a lock. it doesn't start the car just like unlocking the front door to your home doesn't turn on the lights. It enables you to twist the ignition switch, which actuates a rod that moves contacts or whatever that allow the car to start.

changing transmission?

well i have a 90 honda accord and i was having the same exact problem. i fixed it easily once i figured out what it was. It was the ignition switch itself, (the electrical part of it). i didn't have to get a new key or anything. im pretty sure that it is the same for you. just look for the part on ebay. i got mine for fifty dollars brand new with the OEM warranty.
