Cleaning brake fluid from brake drums?

Question:
I've got a classic car with drum brakes that failed it's MOT on brake efficiency. Took off the drum affected and it has oil/brake fluid contamination, presumablt from a leaking cylinder seal.
What can I use to clean the drums up and not leave an oily residue? (i.e. not paraffin / diesel).
Will the brake pads need to be replaced or can these be cleaned too?

Use Brakeclean.. you can get it from any auto store. You might be able to save the pads, if they are soaked all the thru, then replace them.

I use surgical spirit - it breaks down the oil and evaporates quickly to leave the drum residue free. Brake pads or drums can be cleaned the same way but to be honest I don't mess with those - I replace as a matter of course.

1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Shaking??

you can use a good non chlorinated brake cleaner. usually you can get this at autozone, o' riley's or various other parts stores. its a fast dry no residue cleaner for brakes. that should take the grease and oil right off the drums. you can clean the brake shoes as well with this cleaner, but i would suggest just replacing them, due to the fact that the brake material has already soaked up the oil and such..

Yes Pad must be replaced. They are contaminated. Any type of Brake parts cleaner will work fine. This can often be found at any auto parts store in a spray can. Use it to clean the whole assembly. DO NOT get any of it on the paint. I will strip it right off. Once you have sprayed the drum and the assembly, use a clean towel to dry it off. Then reassemble the drum after the other repairs have been completed.

Get a can of any brand of brake parts cleaner. It will do the job quickly. I buy the stuff by the case because it is great for cleaning any auto part covered in dirt and oil. It is good for cleaning internal gun parts too.
