Jeep Commander Manual Transmission not shifting?

I just bought a 2006 Jeep Commander and the Man. transmission feature will not shift back up to higher gears. It will shift all the way down to "1" but will not go back up to the higher gears - 2, 3 and 4. Am I missing some setting? Do I need to turn this feature on somehow or is it malfunctioning.

i have the 06 commander, there is nothing you need to activate, the only thing i could possibly think is that in order to shift up click the shifter away from the driver, or to the right to up shift. You pull towards you to down shift, and away to shift up. Obviously if you know this and it still doesn't work, then its a malfunction return to the dealer and have them look at it.
