Question:
I filled up my radiator on my Saxo 1.4i, and noticed there was green gunk inside the tank, I was just wondering what this was, and what is the cause of this? I spoke to my friend who said it may be the head gasket wearing down, but how much would that cost to replace? Thankyou!!

What is the best exhaust system or muffler for a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2?
If it was your head gasket it is unlikely to be green sludge - when a head gasket goes the water & oil mix is a yellowy sludge almost like caramel in colour.I would suspect that the green jelly like 'gunk' as you put it is more than likely down to mixing two incompatible anti freeze types - best thing to do is to drain the system and refill and check again after about a week. If the same thing is happening, take the car to a local MOT testing station - normally they will check the coolant with a probe and that will give you an indication as to whether the head gasket has gone - traces of oil vapour will be present in the coolant mixture. They normall won't charge you for this as it literally takes about 10 seconds.
DRAIN THE RADIATOR - look at the bottom and there is normally a drain plug - just undo it and let the water out. Put the plug back and start the car for 10 SECONDS ONLY - let the water out again and then replace plug. Fill coolant tank and allow rad to fill - start car - let it run and continue filling making sure no air is trapped in system i.e. no bubbles. Do not overfill - little by little until coolant tank is filled to the correct level

you should drain it off and refilHow do I change a taillight bulb in my 07 Honda CRV.?
The previous coolant may have been in there far too long, flush it out and give it a good cleaning. Mix the new coolant 50/50 with water and keep an eye on it. Drive it and then check level the following day before starting and top up if it needs. Then if you have a head problem the level will go down after that. What's a good way to make my carb. run better on my car?
Perhaps the green gunk in your tank is just the residue from the water that has been in the system for a long time and If your car is running ok dont worry too much about it this is normal. If you wish to flush out your radiator you can buy raditor flush from any auto spares shop, poure it into your radiator tank take it for a spin to warm it up then drain drain it it out then fill up again with a mixture of water and antifreeze.
It is unwise to use just water in the radiator because it leads to rust formation in the water pump.
