I also have a 1987 Chevy pickup.Truthfully i beleive that little wire only goes to a tachometer. If your truck does not have a factory tach then there will be nothing hooked to it.GM just left this wire there in case you wanted to install a tachometer later on down the road.I too have a single wire like this on my coil and i hooked my aftermarket tach into it and thats what it was--for a tach.I would go to the local parts store and buy a repair manual, it should help you. I would assume its either a ground, or something that was used on a later version of your truck.

That will be your main power feed from the coil to either the reluctor or points depending on whether you have electronic or points ignition. There should be 3 wires from the coil 1 to the center of your distributor cap, 1 to your power source, and one to the points, or reluctor,.wont go without it!vauxhall omega 2.5 t.d. starting problem?

Two are on the -, one that goes to your distributer for the points. The other goes to the tachometer. If you don't have one, then no big deal.
Some cars with manual tranny had a wire going from - to the cruise control, if so equipped.

I own a shop and have done many of these. The wire is for your power to the ignition system. If this wire is plugged into the coil on the distributor cap, it should be brown, and a pretty heavy gauge wire. Right above the distributor area you should see a cluster of wires inside a harness that runs across and behind the brake booster. If you will take the covering off this cluster and look real good you should find a brown wire that is the same gauge. This is where it goes! You will have another set of wires that come out of the distributor and plugs into the coil too. If your truck is an 87 and the engine you are putting into it has a points type distributor, you will need to change to the HEI type distributor, or install a resistor to cut the voltage down to the coil, and use an external coil that bolts to the intake. Best to keep it with an HEI and you don't have to worry.Glad I could help you, Good Luck!
