Question:
i put a used transmission in a 98 escort. when it shifts from first to second it's very jerky and hesitates to shift. after that it shifts into overdrive nice and smooth. so i think its skipping a gear. the last transmission did the same thing so this transmission is not bad. the reason we changed the transmission is because it had a quarter sized hole in it where the driveaxles go in. we jb welded the hole but after e few miles i heard a pop and there was another hole. the new tranny isn't getting any holes in it. the check engine is on but not anything for the tranny. can anyone help me with the solution to this problem?

This is a very common problem with escorts. They shift very violently, it will feel like the car goes into neutral, then slams into gear. The problem is finding a used transmission that doesnt have the same problems. Unfortunatly, if it doesnt have the problem when you buy it, it will soon after. If you had the money, you could have the transmission rebuilt by a performance shop that makes their own parts, but it would cost more then the car is worth.
If you love your car, and dont want to get rid of it, and dont mind putting a few $$$ into it, i would convert it to a manual. I mean spending $2000 to convert it, vs $1000 every 6 months for tranny/labor is worth it.
I want a small R.V. with a diesal engine for best mileage, any suggestions?
A little wisdom for next time. If you ever buy an automatic car, the very first thing you do, is install a tranny cooler. They are $30 (and probably $200 for labor if you didnt do it yourself), and they will lengthen the life of your tranny by 60%.
