2002 Ford explorer Rear End?

Question:
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer with 89,000 miles on it. I took it in for a belt issue which the dealer fixed for me for about $250. No problem. He then tells me that through out the cars inspection they found that the seals on the rear axles were leaking. So he tells me it will be about $500 to replace the seals. I'm ok with this even knowing that the seals cost about $2. They then come back to tell me that the noise coming from the back of the car is cased by the the ring and pinion being damaged because the seals were leaking. First off I don't remember any noise. Second this is now going to cost me $1500 dollars if I want it fixed.

Anyone know what size wheel lugs I need?

My question is, How do I know that I am not being ripped off by the dealer. Should I fix the seals and top it off with fluid or does the rear end really need to be rebuilt with a new ring and pinion? How do I know what needs to really be done?

Lets start with the axle seals..the leaking seals are a common problem in Independent rear suspenion Explorer's.As for the price of the repair. $500.00 sounds a little high unless there going to exchange the fluid in the rear axle. As for just replacing the seals that sounds a little high it should be around $350.00 give or take a little..The axle seals would have to be leaking very bad to damage the ring gear & pinion due to excessive heat. As for replacing the ring gear & pinion...Ford has had alot of problems with a whine and binding when turning deeply in a circle .in the rear axle it is due to the ring gear & pinion and the actual housing...with the price quoted of $1500 that sounds like they could be pricing you a complete unit ready to install....if u have not noticed a whine in the rear axle,(this usually occurs at 30-50 mph with your foot lightly on the throttle or the opposite off the throttle.Alot of times if you have the radio on or talking you will probably not notice it. If its not bugging you then i would replace the seals and have the rear axle serviced and drive it until it get louder or starts grabbing..just remember the louder it gets the worse the problem is...sooner or later if u keep the vehicle i would have the complete unit replaced..

Get a second shop inspection and opinion. It is not to likely that the crown and pinion were damaged unless you ran it completely out of oil, it is possable that if you have limited slip rear diff, that the clutch packs were overheated and damaged. (you would notice a noise on corners) Probably get away with seals and new fluid.

What does it mean when your steering wheel starts to vibrate when you are driving?

He's trying to rip you off... rearends never go bad. First do you see any fluid leaking anywheres? If no then dont worry about it. If yes.... then get the seal replaced by another garage. If it is the rearend pan gasket you can do that yourself. He is trying to rip you off.

What is done with a 30K tune up?

He's trying to rip you off. Replacing the entire rear end wouldn't cost $1500. They all seep a little. Replacing the pinion seal is only an $80 item, and the axle seals would be about $200. Fix the seals and fill it with synthetic differential oil. Don't let that crook touch it.
I'm still wondering what kind of "belt issue" costs $250 to fix.
