my car, a Ford Escort 1993, will not shift out of "park". we checked transmission and engine oils, both were fine. we found that our brake fuse was blown, could this be the reason why the car won't shift out of park?

on those ford escorts,you have a safety control,to keep it from some kid taking it out of park.check the fuse panel,where it says brake lights,to see if the fuse is burnt.Yes. Since the car has to "know" that the brake is applied before allowing brake release.
No...that fuse is only for the brake light....need to call a tow truck most likely.

Yes, it is possible. The brake has to be depressed to release the gear. If the fuse is blown then the sensor can not read it as being depressed and would not allow the gearshift to move.can a tyre with a leak from the bead be repaired or do i have to get a new tyre?

YUP. Most cars and trucks today have saftey locks on the gear shifts of automatic cars. If the fuse is blown then the relay that opens the switch to release the gear shifter is not going to function. Having said that, you need to find out WHY the fuse blew.I have a 1998 Honda Civic EX. It died while driving, and has not restarted.?
Yes as the brake pedal must be pushed for it to come out of park. If the ECM does not see the brake pedal pushed the inter lock will lock the car in park. No brake lights no signal to the ECM to unlock the shifter. I`m not sure but you should replace the fuse.A fuse will wear out just like a light bulb from metal fatigue from heating and cooling.It could be a safety feature installed to keep you from driving with bad breaks.This is a new one for me but then again?That fuse probably cost no more than a buck. Your best bet would be to go buy one and replace it. Then youll know for sure.

yes it is most likely why your car won't shift out of park. as many have already answered here before, the mechanism that releases the lock from your shifter is wired to the brake switch. you should replace the fuse, however most likely it will blow again. this means you could have a short in that circuit. I had the same problem with my car and it was one of my brake lightbulbs. the mechanic replaced the bulb and soldered the socket and haven't had that problem anymore.More Questions & Answers ...
