It should have a ID on top of the bell housing stating what it is. If not look at the side. Once you find something jump online and do a serch and you should find out. If all else fails try looking at the electrical hook ups,it should have two on the side...And it will also have a plastic sensor for the shifting right by the shift linkage

well a 700 transmission is not like the 350 or 400 ...the 700 has a square pan with 16 bolts...the 350 and 400 have odd shaped pans and have 13 bolts.so just count your pan bolts.also the 350 and 400 have modulators and the 700 has no modulator...the modulator is a silver roundish piece that is at the back or side of the 350 and 400..it pokes out so you cant miss them....so if the trans has a modulator and has less pan bolts than 16 then you are looking at a 350 or 400 trans .but 16 pan bolts and no modulator and square pan then you have a 700 also the 700 has overdrive....
