Question:
My daugther has an 89 camero that makes a whirling sound in the back end when u drive it. We just bought it and I found some old paper work in the glove box and it says spider gears in rear differential are worn and making noise, need to replace gears and all bearings. Is this going to be expensive to do and is the car still ok to drive?

How do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed?
The previous answers are reasonably correct. The spider gears do not turn (and do not make any noise) unless you are turning corners. If the noise is on the straight and level road, it is not the spider gears. How often should a person wax their car?
In a nut shell the spider gears are the small gears that allow the inner axle to turn slower that the outer axle during a turn. This keeps the wheel rolling without t locking up. replacing these gears do not require the removal of the two big gears, the ring and pinion, but require removal of the axle assemblies. The labor should be around four hours at the going shop rate plus the price of the parts.Burping out the cooling system?
The spider gears are part of the mechanism in the diff. that allow the rear wheels to rotate at different speeds when you corner, or do a one tire burnout in your hot new (old) camero. A quick web search for "differential" "spider gears" will likely get you a picture of the assembly. This is a several hundred dollar repair that if you have to ask about, you can't do yourself. A mechanic can however, pull the differential cover and inspect it for about a half-hour's labor and some new oil.brand new car needs a oil change?
Unless you're quite deaf, if the noise wasn't bad enough to keep you from buying the car, its probably not in imminent danger of catastrophic failure. Such a failure could result in an axle/wheel assembly exiting the side of the car, or the guts of the differential self-destructing. Or, the rear end may just make noise for ever. Regardless, someone thought it was worth getting rid of this car. In the future, don't buy cars that make funny noises or rattle, shake, steer funny, belch smoke, or smell bad inside.
