When I shift my car Into drive, It jerks really hard some times, why Is this?

Question:
This Is on a Automatic 1983 Cutlass Supreme.

Answers:

First make sure your engine is set to factory specs at idle and in park. When you go from park to drive do you have a delay and then the transmmision shifts..? and then you have a hard engagement? If so, your front clutch pack seals are bad and the tranny will need a seal replacement kit as long as you have no hard part damange. If you are hearing a hard clunk you could have bad universal joints. Also notice if it's doing it
when it's cold or hot. If it's doing it cold you could have your cold fast idle linkage hanging up or needs to be readjusted.

Also a dirty filter could cause this problem, or low fluid.

You should check your clutch free play and make sure that the clutch is fully disengaged from the transmission.

your trans. isn't bad yet. the jerking is annoying, but it's still fine. My Caprice did that so hard that it chirped the tires when i shifted into drive. Normally once the trans. warms up it doesn't do that anymore. You might make sure your idle speed isn't too high.

Check your transmition fluid level and add some.

your trans could be going (pray its not, really expensive) or your fluid could just be bad, have it checked out.
