Question:
I'm assuming it measures the heat from fuel. The reason I ask is because my husband and I went to a dealership to buy a 2000 Nissan Xterra, and the "service engine soon" light came on. A big red flag...the salesman tells us it is because it needed service/a tuneup whatever.
The only thing is he didn't know my husband asked the actual mechanic working on the car. The mechanic said it was the heat sensor for the fuel, or something like that. They said it was fixed, but anything that causes the engine light to come on worries us. If anybody knows if this repair was just a regular thing or something serious, please let us know.
Does having a sensor that is broken mean the gas will ignite or something like that? Also, would this cause the engine light to come on? Or can the broken sensor cause something worse to happen to the engine?

Is there a way to fix cloudy headlight covers without replacing them?
If the tech was telling you the truth (he really should have no reason to lie) he is talking about the fuel temperature sensor. It just measures the temp of the fuel in the fuel tank for emissions reasons and relays this info to the main computer on the SUV.It is not a big deal. It won't directly cause any engine damage or cause the gas in the tank to ignite. Get it in writing that this was the cause of the SES light and that it has been replaced. The tech could have just erased the code and it won't come back on right away even if it has not been replaced. See link.
