For 7 years now, because I didn't know any better, each year I've spent $35 to do my best to clear the rust off my car, and then I'd put primer on it and the car has looked great in the past (even though it's primer color). Someone told me primer is only creating more rust. And I'm at the point that this car needs a real paint job.
Is it possible to replace the bumper of a 1994 325i BMW with a bumper of a newer 325i BMW?
I'm wondering if the can spray paint I'd buy and put on the car would be better for this old car than the expensive of a Maaco paint job, and, friends tell me that if a place like Maaco does the paint job it would be like putting a shell (of paint) on the car and no rust would seep thru. OK Primer just helps the paint stick it doesn't do anything to seal the metal so yes your car keeps rusting if you just put primer on it.What you can do now depends on how bad it is but even a cheap cover up is better than nothing.Clean it up the best you can paint it and keep it waxed.If all you can afford is a spray can job go for it,it's better than nothing. You can grind on that area and put duraglas over it and sand it down and paint your car, but eventually the rust will come back. The only way to get rid of it is to section a new piece of metal into the rusted area or replace the whole panel. Rust will kill your car, what you need to do if you really want to stop it, is cut away the rusted part till you get down to the good metal, then Bondo or weld new metal back on to get it to retain it’s shape.

The rust preventive primer I'd recommend is RustSeal by KBS Coatings. It's a moisture- cured urethane that is formulated in a visocity that is able to seep deep down into the open pores of the metal where it cures by drawing moisture out of the metal. And as It dries into a rock hard nonporous coating... it locks out water & oxygen permanently.
This paint is self leveling so it can be brushed or sprayed.
It comes in colors so choose one that is easier to topcoat.

Follow the 3 step system they have to clean & prep the metal. You want to clean out & open up those metal pores for the paint to be able to seep & lock into the metal as it cures.
