Transmission problem with 88 chev cavaliar?

just bought a used 88 chev cavaliar ran fine around town even took it on the highway, as i got it home it died out in the driveway, it starts up fine and even idles fine when i put it in neutral but the second i put it in drive or reverse it dies out, i waited about half hour then took it out again, worked alright for 10 minutes then started again

i own a repair shop and the lock up converter switch has gone bad that's whats causing it to stall on you if you,ll look on the side of the transmission facing you when your standing at the front of the car you,ll see a harness about half way up on the transmission,it wont hurt to disconnect this,and it will stop it from dieing on you, all its doing is not letting the converter unlock,and it don't allow it to idle good,you might can get that harness unplugged easier from the bottom,but that's whats causing this to happen to it,you can have it fixed later on,for now it will be alright to drive like that ,good luck i hope this helps.

Is there something wrong with my car fuse?

If it stalls when you stop, but only after you go about 45mph. You need a new TCC* solenoid. (*Torque Converter Clutch) It sounds like the solenoid is sticking, and making it like stopping in a manual without pushing the clutch. If that is your symptom, try unplugging the plug on the front of the transmission. If you have it unstuck, this will keep it from engaging again until you fix it. This is an exellent way to confirm my diagnosis. Don't drive it too much without this plugged in, because it will make your transmission run hotter. A few miles to work and back is ok, 50 miles each way on the expressway, not good.

Can anyone recommend a clear bra for cars?


The part is only about $25 and is total cake to replace once you have the cover off the transmission.
