I need to purchase and replace an engine for my car, where can I find one and how much does it cost?

Question:
It is a good car so it would be cheaper for me to replace then engine than buy a new car. Where do I purchase engines? How much on average do they alone cost? Plus labor, please help.

Depend on how much you want to spend and if you want a warranty. You can get a low mileage Japanese engine, but it is a bit risky these cost about $400 plus installation for about $1000 total. Or you could get a rebuilt with a warranty for about $2000 or a factory 'crate' engine for about $4000. If you have a good mechanic go to him and ask his advise, as he will have local experience and should stand behind his work. Or go to 3-4 shops and get estimates then decide.

Nitrous for inline 4?

Jasper is a common place to purchase a rebuilt engine with a warranty. I think the web page is Jasperengines.com on there you will find a list of "certified" installers who would be able to give you a better idea on price. I would suspect that you will pay some where in the neighborhood of $3500 for an engine with install. It will depend on the type of engine though. You could alway find an engine from a salvage yard. Used, but will cost you a fraction of the price. Probably around $1,500

My car cuts off arther driving for awhile?

this may cost more but it will eliminate all hassles and unseen problems - have the dealer do it because if they screw it up they have to fix it free plus it will have a warrenty that comes with it , like i said it'll cost more but so much easier for you - you could also buy a motor from autozone and find a good install shop to do this for you but then your back into the extra $ of it not to mention the extra time and hassle .

I heard the transmissions on the '98 had been known to have some serious problems, needing re-built,etc. ?

too many unknowns to answer this question.
Year, make, model, engine size, auto or manual, etc?
It is almost always cheaper to replace the engine than the entire car, but financing an engine swap can be grueling whereas getting another car is far easier. Typical prices for an overhaul are 3-5K and for a re-manufactured engine 4-7K. They usually want part up front and the balance on completion. Tough to do unless you have a lot of cash or great credit. Buying another car is usually the easy way out.
