My key keeps turning in the ignition..help!?

Question:
I have a 2004 ford taurus and the key keeps turning round and round. the car won't start. it seems to me that the engine doesn't know that there is even a key there. like it normally turned and you could feel the clicks from 1 to 2 and 3 and so on.it doesn't click anymore. any suggestions?

My friend has a bad head gasket for a oldsmobile cutlass sierra 93'?

Picture this in your mind, the electrical switch that starts the car and gives you the clicks is actually bolted to the steering column under the dash.there is a rod or linkage that runs all the way up to the lock cyl. at the opposite end of the cyl.from where you insert the key is a small round gear that mates with
a flat 'gear' to witch the linkage or rod is connected. the key is fine becouse it is releasing the tumblers, but one of your two 'gears' is striped alowing unlimited rotation i hope that this helps

find a lock smith, or call the dealer ship. if the lock is not broke yet, it will be very soon.
