Clacking Noise '99 Ford Ranger?
I have a question, I got my starter replaced yesterday and by this moring I was driving on the highway and I heard a horrible sound and my car started shaking. I pulled over and shut the car off and the shaking and sound we're still there and soon smoke. Turns out it was my starter the shop said it was a faulty starter but I don't believe that I think someone messed up but they replaced the starter and said it cause no other damage. What other damage could it have caused and should I go get it checked out by another shop?

Bet you it's a chevy. This has happened to me twice in my 35 years driving. Starter drive didn't disengsage, ruins starter, but all else is fine. Easily believable part was a dud.Most starters are rebuilds, anything could have gone wrong. If shop replaced it so easily your in good hands.sound's to me like the teeth on the starter hung up. The only thing that it would damge (destroy?) would be the starter but it may chip some teeth on the flywheel. Highly unlikely. You should be alright.

You might go to another shop and get a second opinion. See if your starter was actually replaced. Tell them what happened to you, and describe the noise in detail.How do you put a rearview mirror back on?
If they bought the starter from an autoparts supplier and they installed it then there should be NO CHARGE for replacing it againMore Questions & Answers ...
