Hi! I have a z24 1990 chevy cavilier and I need to know how much I would have to spend buying an engine for it new or used. Please post any links that might be of interest. Oh yeah I'm in chicago..

I hate to break it to you but the cost of a new engine is gonna be more than the car is worth ( no offense).You may be able to get a junkyard engine for around $500 if your lucky but it WILL have an abundance of miles on it.Having the engine rebuilt or buying a new one is gonna be very costly,maybe $1000-1500 not installed in your vehicle.Your best bet would be to just buy another vehicle unless your are extremely attached to your z24 and it is in superior good shape.Other than that,putting a new engine in a z24 that is 17 years old is not cost effective by any means(unless they car is in super great shape).--update-- nope,not even a used one would be cost effective unless you were able to get a very good price ($200)on a used engine(if you could find one) that you were sure that it ran very good and you were gonna do all the installation yourself,then maybe just maybe,replacing the motor would be moderately cost effective.I have seen many people try to squeeze every last ounce of life they have in their old vehicle and usually they end up dumping thousands of more dollars in it than its worth.I have also done this with an old truck i wouldnt part with.I have over $5000 in motor and drivetrain but the truck is probably only worth about $500.You dont want to go this route.Trust me!!It may be time to let your vehicle go.

doesn't matter where u go in Chicago, desplaines, niles.you'll get ripped off.i agree with the first answer..its not worth it. you'll atleast spend 1-4 grand on the engine alone..probably from a junk yard. and then the mechanics will rip you off and charge you probably the most amount u can afford to pay. get a used car instead. it be much cheaper.there is a an auction place in waukegan.decent, drivable cars for under a grand.

i would go new if i where you most used engines don't have warrants thay could last 1 day or 10 years you just don't know.if you have some one to put it in for you i would go to www.ebay.com if you don't take it to your chevy dealer.a used engine should run you betwen $175-$350 a new one will cost you around $1000
