Diesels operate with a 18:1 to 22:1 compression ration (gas engines go up to about 11:1 with high octane gas)Diesels are much more efficient and the new direct injection ones are better and no noisier than gas engines.

What way should a glass packed muffler be facing?
i own a shop and the difference in the two engines is like daylight and dark,a gas engine has to have an ignition source to ignite the fuel,as to a diesel doesn't have to have an ignition system,if fires off of compression, and the sound you hear from a diesel is because of the valves in them, and the way they fire, you cant ever get rid of the sound of one of those, but on a gas engine ,changing a muffler changes the way it sounds, but it doesn't work that way on a diesel engine, they will always sound like that ,no matter what you do to them, good luck hope this helps.More Questions & Answers ...
