My father in law has an 83, GMC, Sierra, Automatic,And this morning he was driving it around doing things in town, And he went to put it in reverse and the truck went forward! He tried it again and it did the same thing, He put it into neutral and the truck went forward in that gear to so now it goes forward in all gears except for park, Does anybody know what could be the problem causing this? Thank you!!

What might have happened is that the internal transmission linkage may have been disconnected from the selector valve in the valve body and is in the forward (drive) position. This can be verified by dropping the transmission pan and looking at the linkage , in most cases the valve body must be dropped to reengage the linkage with the selector valve. As to why it disengaged, if the external linkage nut was loose it might allow the shift linkage to move side to side and disengage from the selector valve. This should be an easy repair
