Rover 75 1.8 turbo airconditioning motor/fan continues to run after switch off. any suggestions as to why.?

If it turns off after a little while,it's OK. But not if it does not turn off at all.it does this because when you turn your motor off water stops circulating ,hot water remains at the temp sensor,and this keeps the fan going until it cools.

If you have been running the engine for a while, it's normal for the fan to run for a bit (after the engine has been shut down) in order to cool the engine. If it's running continuously and doesn't stop at all, definitely head to your mechanic/dealership to have it checked out...there's a bad switch, sensor or wire somewhere.
