What do you mean by the engine set up? 3.8L's Dont give a lot of problems.
Chances are the upper intake plenum is bad and leaking coolant into the cylinders. I have seen it many times. It will lock the engine down. Tell them to pull the spark plugs out and try to spin it over then. If it turns and blows coolant out of the cylinders, replace the upper plenum, blow all the coolant out of the cylinders and install new plugs.
