Tires, M+S marking?

I'm looking at different tires for my Ranger & I see - M+S marking in the description, what does that mean?

M+S (or M&S as it is sometimes listed) means "Mud and Snow" - the tire meets the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) standards for use in Mud and Snow conditions. In other words, there is at least a 34% void ratio in the tread.

This does not in any way imply the tire will be any good in mud or snow conditions or that it was even tested in such conditions during its design. It just means there are enough grooves in the tread to qualify for the rating. In that sense it is about as useful a piece of consumer information as the UTQG rating system.
