The way I test the shocks is I stand on the bumper, front or back, left or right side, then hop off. The car should come up and then settle. If the shock is bad, the car will go up and down more than once. Repeat for the three other wheels.
The test is to stand or put your body weight onto a corner of the car and jump off (don't fall on your head doing this). The chasse will bounce back up and find stabillity with 1 or two diminishing reflections. If the car keeps rocking the energy you induced with your weight is not being absorbed, the shock on that wheel has lost it's effectiveness.
Oh! This reminds me, pulling a horse trailer with a Toyota Camry is a really bad idea if you wish to preserve the life of your shocks (just in case you were wondering).

There are four shocks one on each wheel (sometimes 2 per wheel with trucks & jeeps). They don't all wear aout at the time, however you want all your shocks to match. Replace both front or both back at a minimum.
