sounds like the gearbox is worn, you may be able to have you box repaired instead of buying a new one.speak to a gearbox specialist and see what they suggest.
It could be a simple shift linkage adjustment,or a more serious internal problem such as a bad gear synchroniser.If it is an internal problem it can be fixed,but will be more expensive.

its a fiat, be happy it goes at all.Inside the gearbox there are things called syncros they are used to allow the gear to engage while the gear box gears are turning. Over time they can become worn resulting in the gear stick jumping out of gear. Unfortunately this is an expensive fix.
Before doing anything on the gear box have the gear stick linkage checked out as it is possible that the bushes in the linkage are worn. Normally this would be easy to diagnose as you may have difficulty selecting the correct gear.
