2000 GMC Clutch slave cylinder on 5 speed manual. Does the tranny need to be pulled out to do this job?

my ford just had to remove it on side of tranny. my mechanic said the whole tranny needs to come out on the 2000 GMC 3500 . Why am I feeling mistrusting right about now ?
