Why is my 96 monte carlo rattling and losing power?

Question:
its a high mileage car but i have never had any problems i got it new. over the past 2 years it has every few months rattled in upper engine when it was cold but then it woud go away it always happened towards time to change oil time. i was on interstate at 85 mph and it started losing power and rattling now it intermittantly works perfect and works crappy any ideas on how to fix it?

Can you say motor change? Is it the top end tick or the bottom end knock?
