Question:
My 02 Astra suddenly started losing a bit of power today, it was kind of 'chugging along'.
Then when I slowed down at a junction or anything it would cut out. Started again without too much trouble.
In the end I decided to take it to a garage across town, being a Saturday it was so busy and it kept threatening to cut out EVERY time I braked. I had to put it in neutral and really give it some welly on the accelerator.
However by the time I got to the garage it was running fine!
So, what was it? Whatever it was the hard revving seemed to clear ir (even if the drivers in front of me didnt appreciate it lol!

A simliar thing happened to my peugeot 206, it was the CPU ( the computer which controls the engine).It was an expensive job, about £500 but I did manage to claim it back with a special service offered by the AA (parts and labour i think it's called), well worth it for £40 a year!!

Could be the automatic choke..If you set off this morning and it was cold outside and just kept going faster like a lunatic then the automatic choke could jam...this would alter the fuel air mixture and when the engine did get hot the choke could still be putting too much fuel mixture into carb..try not to go mad until car warms up.

The problem is the idle control valve. Vauxhall engines are notorious for this valve getting gunked up and causing the car to stall whenever you pull up at junctions and lights etc. When you put the clutch pedal down, the revs drop and the car stalls. Pain in the ars.e! You can get hold of a replacement item for about £80 on ebay or alternatively take yours off and give it a good clean out. You can use detergant and water, just make sure you rinse it thoroughly and dry it before installing it again. It is easy to do, and more importantly free!!

I have fixed this problem quite a few times in the past on the ecotec engines, and it is quite common. (Do a search under idle control valve and you'll see!)
