I have a 1998 windstar van. It has a loud nocking in the engine.?
when I give it gas and as I travel on the freeway, everything is fine. Also it only sputters after I've been driving for a while and when I come to a stop.
It seems like its going to run out of gas but it doesn’t stall.

by the way, I just finished fixing a cracked head and head gasket with some K&W nanotechnology sealant. I flushed the system since then about 30 times.

before I sealed the head gasket, their was tons of water in the oil and the spark plugs could have been drowned but I physically did not see water pouring out of the slots. but their sure was tons of water in the oil. that problem is fixed. their is no more water getting into the oil and its been a couple weeks since I sealed the gasket. I have also changed the oil about 10 times since the gasket problem.

Running with so much water in the oil, the engine must have developed alot of sludge that was sucked up by the pcv system. Get yourself a can of throttle body cleaner and with the engine running, clean out the throttle plate and intake. Pay particular attention to the pencil sized hole at the bottom of the throat where the idle air bypass is. Give that area a good soaking. If it's running well at any speed other than idle, it's not engine internals, like compression or timing. Having only a rough idle is either excessive fuel pressure or lack of air.
sounds like a really low compression ratio, try changing the oil and adding some restore. new plugs might help, new air filter too. what could have happend is the rings were damaged while the gasket was bad and now you're getting piss-poor compression.

You may want to check to see that your fuel injectors have been cleaned. Sometimes a can of fuel injector cleaner can work wonders, other times its not really noticeable. I would also see if the fuel pressure regulator is working. It regulates how much fuel is sent from the gas tank to the engine. If it is faulty it will cause poor idle as well as a drop in mileage. You can get a repair manual from the library or go to an auto parts store and look up where to find it in one of their manuals in the book isle.Gear 3 slips back to neutral while driving?
