Looking for professional auto mechanics to answer this one.?
First, unhook the battery and take the front wheels off.Next, unbolt lower control arm and take the nut off the axle on either side, then remove the axles from the car. If the tranny is automatic unhook transmission cooler lines from transmission. Now you have to remove the starter and things that might be in your way, like the airbox, battery tray, etc. Next unhook all electrical connections and shift cable. If it is manual, unhook all the linkages from the transmission. Now, take the torque convertor nuts off and remove bell housing bolts holding tranny to motor (support the motor w/ pipe and chain or jack). Again, if it is manual, don't worry about unbolting the clutch assembly from the motor -- the input shaft should slide right out of it, just remember to unhook the clutch cable. You may have to unbolt the engine cradle (not sure without seeing it). Finally, unhook either 1 or 2 motor mounts from tranny and carefully pry it away from the motor. Re-assemble in reverse!
Please note that if you are at all uncomfortable with this process or have any doubts, it really would be best to have a qualified technician perform this procedure. Replacing a transmission is one of the most advanced procedures you can do on a front-wheel drive vehicle.
