2002 530i gasoline requirements?

I just got my bimmer and have been told that I could use regular gas in it, and then a repairman told me I should always use high test gasoline. I want to do the right thing and keep my bimmer in excellent condition. Anyone know for sure what to use, expecially with the price of gas.
