Question:
I recently replaced the brake rotors and wheel cylinders in my 89 Celica GT. They have been bled and all but are worse than before. My father (who did the brake job) said that the rotors need to adjust outward, which he said is done by going in reverse and using the brake, this adjusts a little bar which pushes the rotors outward. I know little about cars but can anyone tell me why I have almost no brakes?
Answers:
1. Adjust the rear brakes. On the backing plate there should be a small rubber plug that can be pried out. Spin the tire by hand while you turn the star adjuster using a brake spoon (a screwdriver will also work) until you get a little bit of drag.
2.You may have misunderstood what your Father said. The rear brakes would have an automatic adjuster that will push the brake shoe's outward when you use the brake's in reverse. To do this you have to go back and forth as going forward reset's the adjusting mechanism and "arm's it". This could take a seriously large amount of time and effort so adjust them by hand.
3. It is possible that you didn't get all of the air out of the system. I have seen times when you need to power bleed the system to remove all of the air.
In your case, I suggest you take it to a shop and have it power bled there. (It takes a special devise to do this.)
