How many gallons does it take to fill it? Your owner's manual should give a tank capacity.You might have an inaccurate fuel gage. perhaps you are never letting it go below 3/4 of a tank or so.

See how far the gage goes down before it runs out. It may "sit on empty" for several gallons before you run out.
Put the gas in out of youre gas can, and go to a gas station. Fill the tank completely. The gas you put in should be close to the tank capacity listed in your owner's manual.

If the tank takes a lot less gas than it says is its capacity, you may have a problem with the tank: a factory defect like a dent or a filler tube incorrectly installed.

Fill up the tank and reset the trip odometer. Then divide the miles you drive by the amount of gallons that are in your tank. If you are getting the average amount of mpg then there is nothing more that you can do.
No additive will make a large difference to your fuel consumption. Driving gently will assist. Keeping your tyres correctly inflated can make as much as 20 per cent difference. ( see sources)
Don't leave unnecessary items in your car (they add weight).
Accelerate gently and watch the traffic ahead so that you aren't accelerating when the people up ahead are slowing down. Don't chop and change lanes, choose a lane and stick to it. If it's a manual, (I think Americans call them stick shift), shift up through the gears as quickly as possible WITHOUT labouring the engine. If you mainly drive short trips (5 to 10 minutes) your mileage will be worse because your engine will be running richer for a higher percentage of time than a long trip vehicle.
Lea ve for work earlier to avoid the heavier traffic. (some people use the extra time to go to the gym near work etc.)
Lastly you could always trade it in for a smaller more economical car but You'd have to look at the dollars there.
