What is a 'bump shifter'?

i just bought a 67 mustang 289 4 bbl. the guy i bought it from said it has been set up for racing and had a bump shifter installed. what is this? and how do you race with it. thanks.

Well I know it as a centre consol automatic trans shifter (usually with a very short straight pattern handle) that you just have to tap or slap to shift to go thru the gears manually.. also known as a ratchet or slap shifter..

How you race with it is start in 1st (or low) and go thru the gears manually rather than putting it in drive and letting the trans autoshift... manually lets you over rev more than the auto shift will... thereby giving you better overall speed times...
