Question:
I drive an '88 Toyota Corsa EL-30 1300cc Stick Shift. I keep getting an engine vibration each time I pick up from a complete stop in first gear. I'm suspecting a perished engine mount. If it's an engine mount is rebuilding it a good idea as these parts are now very rare?

First of all, the lady that said motor mounts cost 3 bucks is undershooting the price a lot and must not know what a motor mount is and what they normally cost. They do vary a lot, especially on the type of engine mounts that are use. First of all if that is your problem, normally it causes more of a clunk then a vibration, but it can cause a vibration like you stated, but is much less common. One way to tell is to pop the hood and let someone watch the motor when you start it, and rev it up in neutral. Normally there is going to be excess movement of the motor, sometimes you can tell which mount it is. It could possibly be the clutch and in rare cases exhaust(but not from the way you describe it), but by the sounds of it, it does seem more likely to be a mount. I have two suggestions on getting it fixed. Personally I got the polyurethane mounts for my car and it does create more vibration at idle, but I do not mind it, and they basically last forever. These may be hard to come by with your vehicle, I am not very familiar with it. You could possibly get one molded for your car, and install the insert yourself, but this normally requires the polyurethane molds to be machine pressed in. The other option that I may do if i were you is to go to a junk yard. You may be able to find one with motor mounts that you could get very cheap, but would require a lot of labor to remove them. I am not sure of the set up in those cars but if it is only a 1300cc motor, I wouldn't think it would be to hard removing and installing motor mounts. If the cars are rare at junk yards just keep looking, I have the same problem but normally find what I need as long as I keep looking, also check ebay.com and parts.com you may have some luck there. You may try to order one directly from the dealer, though I doubt they would carry them anymore unless they used similar mounts on a newer type vehicle. I also forgot to mention that it would most likely NOT be suspension, because it can not really cause a vibration at start up like you described and at very low speeds. Just wanted to rule that out before other ppl start stating its a ball joint or some bs, lol... Well good luck with your ride, peace.
What is a good automotive book to use when you need instructions on fixing a pontiac?
Are you talking about motor mounts? They are about $3.00..and can be found at any auto parts store.
Are maf's for import's relatively universal?
Are your sure the vibration is coming from the engine? Sounds like it could be a bent driveshaft.

I'm not familiar with that model but some vehicles have shock absorbers built into the rubber mounts.
A perished or worn or broken engine mount may well be your problem and some are more expensive than others.
VERY FEW engine mounts can be economically rebuilt and you should, somewhere, be able to find a new one.
ALL parts can be rebuilt but many are not worth the dollars. eg some mounts can be rebuilt for a few hundred dollars or located at an overseas supplier for 40 or 50.
You may also have a clutch problem which is not noticeable in othger gears because you do not ride the clutch as much in other gears.
Last but not least (Don't laugh at this it actually happened) turn off the radio etc. and listen.
We once had a customer who complained of a similar problem with his commodore. We couldn't get it to do it. Eventually I told him to take me for a drive. He cranked up the radio, (awesome sound system), floored the accelerator and dumped the clutch! The vibration was the poor tyres turning to smoke!
Not very likely with your little car but still possible. Depending on tyres and roads etc.
